The Effectiveness of an Extensive Family of Benefactors
From the very beginning the Grotto was surrounded with faithful stewards: Fr. John DuBois (1807), Fr. Patrick Duffy (1875), Bishop Thomas McGovern (1879) and Monsignor Hugh Phillips (1958).
With their devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary and their faithful friends who had passion to expand the Grotto, St. Mary's Chapel on the Hill was built in 1807; oldest replica Grotto of Lourdes Cave in the United States was built in 1875; Corpus Christi Chapel (located in the place of the original Grotto visited by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton) was built in 1879; and the rest of the holy grounds you see today was expanded by the guidance Monsignor Hugh Phillips from 1958 to 2002.
For over one hundred years, the National Shrine Grotto has been dependent on our Grotto Family of Benefactors so to continue our mission for our Blessed Mother Mary.
